The Mortgage Loan Saga: Still More Documentation

As you are probably aware, once your mortgage loan pre-approval goes through, it is only the beginning. Then the real fun begins. And even as the loan is being processed, and the whole home buying thing is happening (appraisals, inspections, home owner insurance, etc.), you are gathering still more documentation. I’m finding this out the hard way. Just when I thought we had everything in, it turns out we’re missing something. And believe me, there’s so much you have to do that it’s not hard to miss something.

This time, it’s more documentation regarding the deferment of my husband’s student loans. He’s in a Ph.D. program right now, so all of his student loans are deferred. This is nice, because it means that they aren’t being counted in our debt-to-income ratio. We had one letter from one lender about the deferment, and were told it was enough. Now, of course, the bank has gone back through and decided it wasn’t enough. Not only do we have to have a deferment letter from each lender, but we have to have one for each loan account number. Precious. So that’s what we’re working on now.

It seems as though there might be an end in sight, but I keep thinking that we’ll never get the house, because we’ll always need one more piece of documentation.

Yes, it really does seem that it will never be over, but it will be. Buying a house was a nightmare for me, but it all turned out well in the end.
