One of the things about having a home mortgage is that you are responsible for getting it repaired, and all ready for the different seasons. And as autumn comes on (I love jacket weather!), it is time to think about whether or not your home is ready for winter. It’s kind of strange to think that my husband and I are going to need to go out and buy a cover for our air conditioning unit. And, getting your home ready for winter can also save you money in energy costs. Here are some little things you can do to help winterize your home (and save money):
Check weather-stripping around windows and doors to make sure that it is still tight
Make sure that you close your fireplace flue when not in use
If you can afford it, storm windows and doors can help, as well as energy efficient windows (also, you can buy insulating curtains to help out)
Check the attic insulation
Replace filters in your furnace
Check pipes, and make sure that your outside sprinkler system is ready for winter (a leak due to burst pipe can be very expensive)
Also, remember safety! Those heating appliances haven’t been used for months. Shakhammer has some great safety tips for getting your home ready for winter.
