Right now, there are a number of people in trouble with their home mortgage loans. Indeed, with unemployment still quite high, and the recession only just beginning to come to a close, many are still struggling with foreclosure. It is important to note that there are programs out there meant to help you with loan modification or by other means to avoid foreclosure. But there are also number of scams.

Scammers intent on taking advantage of those in unfortunate circumstances are offering foreclosure rescue services — only to pull the rug out. Foreclosure rescue scams are on the rise as the unscrupulous offer to help with a loan modification or use some other method of “rescue.” Victims pay money up front, or even sign over the deeds to their homes. Then, of course, the scammer makes off with the money or sells the home they now own (or both), and the victim is in even worse shape.

The Department of Housing and Urban Development has an informative Web site that addresses foreclosure, and provides you with contact information for legitimate entities that might be able to help you.
