One of the more important things you need to do to protect yourself from problems when it comes to making claims on your homeowners insurance for damaged property is to have a list of items in your home. This way, you will have documentation of what is in your home. You can make a list on paper, but a better way is to use a computer.

Fiscal Geek recommends that you make use of the free home inventory tool, Know Your Stuff. This includes the option to do a room by room inventory, and include pictures. It is also web based, which is helpful since if your computer is destroyed, you will still have access to your home inventory.

Documenting your home’s contents is an important part of protecting yourself financially. It is best to make sure you have your data stored someplace secure, as well. Whether it is a video (with narration) or a list on paper, it is vital that it is properly protected. You could even print out a paper copy of your digital home inventory and store it in a fire safe.
